Født i Leines i Leiranger, d. i Bergen. Sønn av lærer Andreas H. og Dorthea Jonassen, g. 28.11.1935 m. Marta Jansen. Utlært hos N. Helgesen, Bodø, sv.br. s. st. 1916, håndv br Bergen 1935. Arbeidet 1 år i Stockholm hos hoffotograf Flodin, var så assistent i Ålesund, Bergen og Oslo. I 1926 overtok han (etter å ha vært kompanjong en tid) det firmaet som var startet av Harald Johan Nilsen i 1914, overtatt av Wm. Peders og Eckroll Stamsvig i 1919 og drevet av Peders. I 1962 overlot han firmaet til Frithjof von Hanno Kjærsem. Mange tillitsverv innen fotografenes organisasjoner, sølvmedaljer på landsutstillinger i 1928, 1935 og 1936.
