Han var sønn av kirkesanger og lærer Steffen Kinge (f. 1865) og Johanne, født Jacobsen (f. 1967). Han ble gift i 1941 med Margaret Millar (1917-2001), datter av reklamemannen [[Robert Millar]] (1878-1969). Kinge tok examen artium i 1921 og ble cand. philol. i 1928. Han hadde studieopphold i England, Frankrike og Belgia, og var lærer ved Mindes pensjonatskole, før han i 1931 ble lektor i [[Tinn kommune|Tinn]]. Kinge ble i Tinn til 1935, da han ble lektor på [[Nordstrand]] i daværende [[Aker herred|Aker]].
