Han var sønn av lærer og klokker Halvor Lassesen Beraas, senere Vergeland (1755– ca. 1790) og Augusta Antonette Jonsdatter Nedervold (1759–1810). Han ble gift i Kristiansandi 1807 med Alette Dorothea Thaulow (1780–1843). Nicolai Wergeland var far til [[Henrik Wergeland]] og [[Camilla Collett]]. Han døde på [[Eidsvoll prestegård]] i mars 1848, hvor han hadde holdt til siden han ble prest i Eidsvoll i 1817 (prost i Øvre Romerike fra 1822).
