Han ble i 1872 residerende kapellan i Ramnes, i 1877 sogneprest til Rollag og i 1882 til Tinn. I 1883 ble han også prost i Øvre Telemarken prosti. I 1890 ble Kielland sogneprest til Flekkefjord, fra 1891 prost der, før han i 1894 ble sogneprest til Asker. Han var Askers første sogneprest, etter en oppdeling av Asker og Bærums sogn i 1890.
