Født i Tiller, Sør-Trøndelag 02.02.1924. Sønn av overlærer Johan Ludvig Samal og Astrid Guttormsen. Gift i 1950 med Kerstin Thørnberg. 2 sønner. Tok i 1943 3-årig handelsgym. med artium ved Trondheim Handelsgym. Del av læretiden hos fotograf Hilfling Rasmussen, Trondheim og resten hos fotograf Robert Wilse, Oslo. Studerte i 1947-49 ved "The Fred Archer School of Photography", Los Angeles på et 2-årig stipend gitt fra skolen, med spesialstudium i farger. Var under oppholdet i Los Angeles leder for fargelab. i Hollywood. Tok fargekurs i Tyskland i 1953. Startet Star Studio i 1952. Sv.brev 1955 og håndv.brev samme år. Halvårig studieopphold i Los Angeles 1957. Virkested: 1952-: Bergen<br />
