<br />
Hun var født '''Grete Hepburn-Jensen''' som datter av Olaf Johannes Hepburn-Jensen og Ingrid f. Gundersen. Etter [[eksamen artium]] ved engelsklinja på [[Skien høyere skole]] i 1940 og [[Skien handelsgymnas]] i 1941 tok hun utover på 1940-tallet kurs i engelsk, tysk, norsk stenografi og flyvertinneyrket.<br />
<br />
Deretter sjonglerte hun journalistikken og en karriere i lufta. Hun var flyvertinne hos DNL og SAS fra 1947 til 1949 og seinere i Fred. Olsen. Etter jobber i ''Vårt blad'' og ''Verden idag'' på 1940-tallet begynte hun i ''Norsk dameblad'' i 1956. Fra 1962 var hun i bladet ''Alt for damene''.<br />
<br />
Hun giftet seg i 1950 med [[Christian L. Gathe]] (1918&ndash;2010). De fikk to sønner i 1950 og 1954 og bodde i [[Sandbunnveien]] på [[Voll (Bærum)|Voll]] i Bærum. Mannen ble etter hvert gift på nytt.<br />

Grete Gathe ble 82 år gammel og er begravet på [[Steinsskogen gravlund]].<br />
