Læretid hos fotograf Johny Bjørnulf i Fredrikstad fra 1945. Avla svenneprøve samme sted i 1948. I 1946 deltok han i et kurs ved Dansk Fotografisk Fagskole, København. Fra 1948 oppholdt Sønstrød seg i Sveits hvor han arbeidet i 3 perioder på tilsammen 2 1/2 år. Imellom oppholdene i Sveits bestyrte han May Hanssons atelier i Fredrikstad fra mai 1950 til desember 1951, for så igjen å reise til Sveits. I 1952 startet Sønstrød eget atelier i Drammen. Oldermann i Vestfold fotograflaug i 1959-61 og et sentralt medlem i Norges fotografforbunds styre i mange år.
