Dammene ble anlagt i [[1886]] (Nedre) og [[1899]] (Øvre) som [[isdam]]mer og det var [[Isdrift|iskjæring]] i disse helt fram til [[1932]].<br /> <br /> &#039;&#039;&#039;Øvre Smestaddam&#039;&#039;&#039; er den mest kjente og er en del av et opparbeidet park- og friområde mellom [[Ullernchausséen]], [[Monolittveien]] og [[Hoffsveien]]. Den omtales derfor ofte som &#039;&#039;Smestaddammen&#039;&#039; i bestemt form, mens &#039;&#039;&#039;Nedre Smestaddam&#039;&#039;&#039; ligger på nedsiden av Hoffsveien, og mellom denne og [[Priorveien]]. <br /> <br /> Demningen og utløpsluken fra Øvre Smestaddam er rett nedenfor [[Hoffsveien]] 65A, eiendommen kalt &#039;&#039;[[Bjørnebo (Oslo)|Bjørnebo]]&#039;&#039;, og Nedre Smestaddam blir også omtalt som &#039;&#039;Bjørnebodammen&#039;&#039; da denne ligger på nedsiden av denne eiendommen. Rett sør for denne dammen renner Holmenbekken sammen med [[Makrellbekken (bekk)|Makrellbekken]].<br /> <br /> Under [[andre verdenskrig]] ble Øvre Smestaddam tappet ned og [[Smestadleiren]] anlagt her og i området omkring Smestaddammene.
