(Se kart.)<br /> <br /> Bjarkøy er vel mest kjent på grunn av historien om [[Tore Hund]] og hans sentrale plass i kongesagaen til [[Snorre Sturlasson]]. Men det som gjør Bjarkøy spesielt arkeologisk interessant, er det store mangfoldet av spor etter mange hundre, ja flere tusen år før Tore Hunds dager.<br /> <br /> Da isen trakk seg tilbake for ca. 12.000 år siden, begynte menneskene å høste av ressursene langs kysten. Det eldste funnet på Bjarkøy, liker øst for Austnes, er fra [[Yngre steinalder|yngre steinalder]], altså fra perioden 4.500 til 1.800 år før Kristus<br /> <br /> == Maktsentrum på Jesu tid ==<br /> Funn fra seinere tider viser at Bjarkøy var et maktsentrum og høvdingesete gjennom hele jernalderen. Her finnes store båtgraver og markerte nausttufter. På Sandmelen lå verdens nordligste tunanlegg, som var i bruk fra år 200 etter Kristus. Dette ble dessverre pløyd vekk i [[1950-åra]].<br /> <br /> Havet, sjøveien, landskapet og gunstig klima var de viktigste forutsetningene for den velstand som preget Bjarkøy og som ga stedet en fremtredende plass i norsk historie og har betydd mye for utviklinga i hele regionen i eldre tid.<br /> <br /> == Forslag til fredning ==<br /> Riksantikvaren hadde i 2010 foreslått fredning av kulturminnene, noe som kom i strid med grunneiernes interesser.
